Mountain biking on Frozen Icy trails is a BLAST - with the right tires.......

Today I did a 2 hour solo Mtn bike ride and had some hill climbs with my heart rate up way high Mid 160's. I would say today was a TEMPO ride for sure with the 2 hour average @ 135.

We did the Trainer thing @ Keiths Again Jan 19+20

Sat it was Don Keith + I we did 2.5 hours Base Training pace ( zone 2) .

Sunday it was just Keith + I with 2 hour ride at zone 2 with HR in the 124-137 range. Except for my 10 Min TT test where I pushed as hard as I could not knowing if I would blow up or not . Keith was a good coach during the 10 Min's . It was fun and cool to push myself and try not to blow up - several times when I got to the low 160- to Mid 160's I had to back down to 158 ish to keep from crapping out. I averaged 163 for the short TT and hit a MAX of 171 on the final push to the finish line but I ran out of gas 15-20 seconds before the finish line. I was a bit amased as the ride went on keeping at a nice easy pace how the time went buy .. We did a ride in Arizona which was cool . We talked about a Blue Ridge Parkway ride in Virginia + North CArolina some day , we also talked about a visit to Calif to ride with Gary, and about how we all can't wait to get outside and do some nice rides, it was a good social time. The ourside stuff will have to wait a bit as the roads are full of water + Ice. I can deal with the sand but ICE is NO GOOD.

Warm week in Conn. Jan 9-13 2008

Wed + Thurs we had high temps in the 60's . I went home Wed and did my first road ride of 2008, I rode out past Coventry Pizza + at the horse farm turned around then did the Whelling loop. Great ride almost one hour.

Then Sat Jon Mike + I did 45 min's on the rail trail until we hit a ICY section + turned around. Jon + I still wanted more ride time so we hit the road. We did about 1.5 hours no Idea how many miles but - out to Coventry , right on Bunker hill ( up the WALL) , back to route 6 to Long Hill, right on Bear Swamp road to Mike house - some killer Hills on Bear Swamp Road. Jon stayed @ Mikes house + I rode back to my house.

Sunday I did MY normal loop out again thru Coventry all the way to Willimantic right on Rt 6 and back to the house. It was I think about a 70 Min. ride. Of note I got my heart rate monitor working today and hit 161 on one of the rolling hills on Rt. 6 on a hard push. Now my theroticcal Max HR is 220-54=166. So 161 is close to my MAX ??? What does all this mean ????? I dunno know. But I will start using the HR monitor and track some data.

Ice climbing weekend Jan - 5+6 -08 - Day 2+3

Our 2nd climb on Sat Dracula.

Lower chute on Hobbit Coulior - 3rd and last climb Sat .

Jonathan on the CRUX - the ice is only 24-30" wide a bit overhanging and the bottom is mostly broken out . So getting you feet on the ice to get yourself up is very difficult. Jonathan resorted to the rock wall! Very cool strenous climb.

Steve - 1/3 of the way up Cinima Gully - Looking up at Party climbing above us - Crawford Notch Sunday .
1/3 way up looking down.

1/3 of the way up looking down the valley.

Two Guys working a new Mixed route on the bottom wicked overhanging left lower wall of Hitchcock upper Gully.

Upper Hitchcock Gully Sunday

Goofing off at the end of the day

Jonathan + I did two days in Crawford Notch this past weekend.

Sat: Standard route right up the center (2 pitches), then Dracula right side + Hobbit Couloir (crazy hard) .
Sunday: Cinema Gully (made 4 pitch climb into two - with free solo easy first pitch and simo climb last pitch), Upper Hitchcock Gully + East face Slabs Right.

It was warm yesterday - ICE is already melting a lot - I’m afraid what this warm week will do up north!! Stupid winter weather…

I’m Beat to Sh!t today – sore as hell it’s tough getting older…

I will put pic’s on BLOG at lunch or tonight.
